Go Back to the Future: Learn to Save Money by Old-Fashioned Methods: Self-sufficiency and sustainability are buzzwords—not only used in the close-knit homesteading community, but by corporations who want to cash in on a trending value system to make a quick buck.
In order to cash in, however, they had to make some changes. Changing their products would take time and money, so they went about changing us. Through a bombardment of slick advertising they have convinced the American people of something that is patently false: in order to be self-sufficient and live a sustainable lifestyle, we need to buy something, and the more expensive the product is, the more sustainable it must be.
Our great-grandparents would not be pleased. Luckily, everything old is new again… self-sufficiency and sustainability included.
